The Best Wedding DJs and the Ugly Truth About Wedding Prices

Updated: Apr 5, 2023

So you found a DJ for $1000 is it a bad thing?

Well Yes and No.

The DJ you just found may have just started, most likely they are a high school or College student and or is looking to expand their bookings, and like anything fill up his calendar. 50% of something is way better than 100% of Nothing.

They have a low cost controller which can vary from $200 to $600 or they can be a couple thousands of dollars. As DJs we all started somewhere and most of us started in our bedroom thus the name Bedroom DJ. We go in debt pursuing our passion and practice and practice till our fingers are numb. Now does that mean we are ready for the real world of events? Some are and others take a bit longer to get comfortable

Now the iffy part..

  • Your DJ does this as a Hobby, here and there or for fun.

  • They may have no experience with weddings

  • They may be lacking MC skills and are looking to get better.

  • No Planning experience

  • No Insurance which they can get the day of so not a deal breaker

  • No Music knowledge, they may be limited to what they like to play

  • No Backup equipment, most bedroom DJs don’t have backup gear incase something goes bad

Music:

Your DJ might download songs from Youtube, or use iTunes, Soundcloud, Spotify or another streaming service that they'll need Wifi for. Essentially this music can be clean, dirty or edited in a way where another song comes into it. Have you ever looked up a song and half way into the song it changes to another song or even better repeats the chorus over and over... Well this can ruin your 1st Dance, Introductions, Ceremony etc you get the idea.

Sound:

Your DJ just started doing weddings and events so he may not have his own speakers and need to rent them out or borrow them from a DJ friend. There is a plus to this if he has a good friend they may rent the speakers that are in excellent condition with skirts and maybe some up-lights and a facade.

On the other hand if the DJ is new to the area they will have to rent out speakers from Guitar Center or another entertainment company that treat their rental equipment like trash. The speakers maybe banged up and stands may be all scratched if they don't have skirts to cover them and you'll notice that.

So now what?

Do your research now a days you can see what any DJ does. Follow them on IG, FB and their website or if they are going to be playing in a bar or club go see them just remember what they play at the bar or club is not going to be the same music they will play at your event. Once all that is done and if you find that you are OK with all the above, go for it.

Another option is to hire an MC / Master of Ceremonies for the introductions
